Product Description

A sophisticated and finely tuned mountain red blend that captures the essence of Spring Mountain’s rugged elevation. Newton’s 2018 The Puzzle reveals a harmonious balance of power and grace — dark mountain fruit, savory herbs, and graphite minerality layered in a polished, cellar-worthy frame.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Crafted from Newton Vineyard’s high-altitude estate vines on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, The Puzzle 2018 is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon (77%) supported by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The vineyards sit between 500 and 1,600 feet, where volcanic and sedimentary soils yield naturally low yields and intense concentration. Each parcel is hand-harvested and fermented separately before blending and maturation in French oak. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve texture and authenticity — a hallmark of Newton’s estate philosophy since its founding in 1977.

Critics Reviews

Wine Enthusiast’s Virginie Boone awarded the 2018 Puzzle 94 points, describing it as “thick, earthy, and herbal,” with notes of sage, cedar, and dark berry depth, suggesting optimal drinking between 2028 and 2038. Ken’s Wine Guide rated it 92.7 points, praising its “smooth, lush, balanced palate of black currant, graphite, and new leather, framed by graceful acidity.”

"Dried violets, potpourri, pine, blackcurrants and cloves on the nose. Ash, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Layers of juicy blue and purple fruit and flowers. So sleek and refined. Builds on the palate. From organically grown fruit. Try from 2024." Jack Suckling 95 Points

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Deep and inviting, with layers of black currant, blackberry, and dark cherry accented by bay leaf, sage, and cedar. Hints of graphite, violets, and crushed stone lend an earthy refinement.

  • Palate: Medium-to-full-bodied and poised — flavors of cassis, plum, and cocoa glide alongside tobacco, black tea, and savory herbs. Silky tannins and a mountain-mineral freshness define its structure.

  • Finish: Long and complex, tapering through tones of dried herbs, clove, and bittersweet chocolate, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and mountain terroir.
