The 2022 Tignanello from the venerable Marchesi Antinori estate is a distinguished, refined expression of Tuscany’s Super-Tuscan legacy—combining energetic red-fruit vitality, elegant structure and fine oak integration. This vintage offers both immediate pleasure and strong long-term aging potential.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Crafted on the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico region (Tuscany, Italy), Tignanello has long been a trail-blazer of Italian fine wine. For the 2022 vintage, the blend is approximately 78 % Sangiovese, 18 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 % Cabernet Franc. The vineyards sit on soils rich in limestone and schist, at elevations that provide warm days and cool nights—ideal for balanced ripening. After fermentation, each varietal lot is aged separately in new and lightly-used French (and a bit of Hungarian) oak barrels for around 15 months, followed by a period of bottle maturation before release. This blending and maturation process ensures both expressive fruit and layered complexity.
"There’s extraordinary energy in this wine. It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. Density and tension dominate the full-bodied palate, with firm, velvety tannins. It’s slightly austere in the finish at the moment, yet it’s crunchy and full of potential. Try from 2026." James Suckling 96 Points
"The 2022 Tignanello is such an elegant, poised wine. Brisk acids cut through a core of red Sangiovese fruit. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, rose petal and a kiss of French oak appear later, adding notable brightness. The 2022 is a decidedly mid-weight Tignanello, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Tignanello saw rain episodes at the end of the season, like most properties, but steep, well-draining hillsides were a clear advantage. The blend is 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, essentially the classic proportions here." Vinous 95 Points
Tasting Profile
-
Nose: A deep ruby hue with purple glints. Aromatically, the wine opens with ripe black cherries, bramble fruit and pomegranate seeds, underpinned by violet bloom, dried herbs and a delicate spiced leather note.
-
Palate: Medium-to-full bodied yet beautifully balanced. The entry showcases lush Sangiovese-driven red-berry sweetness, then transitions into dark plum, cassis and subtle licorice. Elegant oak spice (cinnamon, clove) and graphite accents emerge mid-palate. The acidity is clean and refreshing, supporting the wine’s structure, while fine tannins provide polished grip.
-
Finish: Long and expressive. The finish echoes the core fruit but adds layers of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and minerality, leaving a lasting impression of sophistication and depth.
