Product Description
Palo Cortado “Peninsula” is a compelling hybrid in Sherry form—carrying the finesse of an Amontillado but the heft and depth of an Oloroso. It offers nutty complexity, subtle richness, and dry concentration with elegance and versatility.
Origins & Craftsmanship
This wine is part of Lustau’s Solera Familiar line, matured in Jerez de la Frontera at the historic Bodega Emperatriz Eugenia. It is made from 100% Palomino Fino grapes.
Its evolution begins under flor protection like a Fino or Amontillado, but over time the flor dies off—transitioning the wine into oxidative (Oloroso-like) aging. This dual character gives Palo Cortado its distinctive profile. The wine is aged in a Solera y Criaderas system, with older and younger elements used to maintain complexity, balance, and consistency. The average age is around 12 years.
The final cask strength is fortified to 19% ABV to stabilize the wine during oxidative aging.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Aromas of toasted almonds, walnut skin, and hazelnut lead the bouquet, layered with toffee, mocha, and gentle spice. There is subtle caramel, light dried fruit (fig or apricot), and an earthy, slightly smoky cast beneath.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with dryness and depth. Roasted nuts and toasted brioche open the palate, followed by notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and dried citrus peel. The oxidative evolution brings savory oak spice, a touch of dark coffee, and a chalky mineral backbone.
Finish: Long, dry, and lingering. The finish carries nutty echoes, a trace of mocha bitterness, saline minerality, and a residual echo of citrus zest. The wine fades out with crisp poise, never heavy despite its richness.

"A mind-blowing sherry is the non-vintage Palo Cortado Peninsula Solera Reserva. Like all Lustau sherries except for the East India, it is made from the Palomino varietal. A dry, crisp, full-throttle, intense sherry offering incredibly complex, nutty aromas, it represents a style that falls between the Amontillado and the more oxidized, heavier Oloroso."
