Bats need our help now to survive and thrive.
The Problem:
Despite all the benefits bats have to offer, there is bad news, the bat population is on the decline. Much like other declining species, bats are struggling to survive due to habitat loss. Deforestation plays a huge role in the destruction of bats' habitat, and this problem is only made worse by wildfires and other increasingly extreme weather conditions.
Beneficial Bats:
Bats are an incredible asset to the ecosystem! Bats aid in pollination and seed dispersal, while also helping control the insect population. Since they eat so many insects, bats help farmers protect their crops, and they help protect trees from disease that's spread by insects. Bats also eat those pesky garden bugs and those mosquitos.
How to Help:
Each contribution you make could help support the purchase of
- wildlife cameras
- camera spikes
- camera locks
- bat sound recorders
- bat houses
Working with our bat rescue and research partners we can ensure what is needed most will be sent. Many of these tools are very expensive, yet very much needed for these groups. Together we can purchase these essentials to support our partners who love and care for bats!
Houses can be installed on buildings or trees, providing a safe place for bats to rest during the day without fear of predators or the elements. Bats prefer small crevices to rest in and will roost in several places, but tree hollows are a favorite spot; these houses act as a replacement when bats in need can't find natural habitat. The recorders, cameras and camera gear help the researchers track bat behavior and calculate the scope of the population loss, giving them vital data to support recovery efforts.
