This “Flamingo Flower” Is the Longest-Blooming House Plant

The Pink Anthurium is one of the most vibrant and longest-blooming house plants you can buy. The plant’s flower - a long, stamen-like protrusion called a spadix - and its modified waxy leaves range in color from a speckled white to a deep, almost-magenta pink, earning the plant its nickname, “Flamingo Flower.”

If you’re searching for a long-lasting flower for your home, Anthuriums are ever-blooming, which means year-round interest, with many blooms flourishing at the same time. Offsetting the unique coloring of each flower are glossy, heart-shaped leaves that are slightly larger than the pink spadix and their surrounding spathes.

Pink Anthuriums are small plants, only reaching a little over two feet in height, so they can fit in many compact spaces in your home. This humidity-loving variety does particularly well in damp rooms, like bathrooms, but can also thrive almost anywhere as long as it has in-air condensation and indirect, bright light from a window.

What’s more is that this plant comes ready to gift in a stylish white container topped with moss. So, give it as a birthday, holiday, or “just because” present to loved ones, or keep it for yourself! Its unusual flowers can even be clipped and placed in bouquets and centerpieces.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Since your plant comes already planted, simply place your anthurium near a window where it can receive bright, indirect light. It should be placed away from drafts of heat and cold  air. Anthuriums grow by absorbing moisture from the air with their roots. So, ideally, keep the plant in humid conditions, like a bathroom, or run a humidifier or place it on top of a humidifying tray.

2. Watering: Water your plant often enough the soil is moist but not overly wet or completely dry. Without enough water and humidity, leaves will begin to feel crisp. Too much water, and they will wilt and yellow.

3. Fertilizing: Every two weeks during the spring and summer, feed your anthurium with house plant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
