Native to South Africa, this quirky plant gets its name from its plump, green stems that resemble tiny gherkins (baby pickles!). In the right light, it produces small, daisy-like yellow blooms in late spring through summer. The blooms open during the day and close at night, following the sun—a behavior known as nyctinasty!
