Further metabolism of TMG produces the enzyme methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (the active form of folic acid). Studies have shown cerebrospinal fluid levels of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) to be low in people deficient in methyltetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme.
