Product Description

A decidedly elegant and mountain-mineral expression of Napa Cabernet, this 2016 from Newton Vineyard delivers power with precision — plush dark fruit layered over herb-tinged rock and spice, all wrapped in a graceful, ageworthy structure that beckons cellaring or immediate relish.

Origins & Craftsmanship
This wine is drawn from the estate vineyards of Newton Vineyard, established in 1977 on the slopes of the Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley, where vines grow between approximately 500 and 1,600 feet in altitude amid mixed volcanic and sedimentary soils. The 2016 vintage comprises 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-harvested and carefully sorted. The fruit saw fermentation in separate lots, with careful oak maturation adding depth and refinement to the finished wine. The elevated site and precise viticulture yield low yields and concentrated flavour, giving the wine its mountain character.

Critics Reviews

  • "This sports lots of savory and sassafras notes up front, followed quickly by a burst of raspberry and blackberry puree flavors that extend lengthily through the black tea– and anise-framed finish. Herb details fill in the background at the very end. Best from 2022 through 2035." Wine Spectator 94 Points

  • Virginie Boone (Wine Enthusiast) awarded the wine 94 points, noting it is “robustly herbaceous and mouth-coating in lush, opulent tannins,” with “concentrated flavours of black currant and pomegranate… complemented by cedar and cigar-box, with an accent of crushed rock.”

  • James Suckling, (95 Points) the 2016 is “incredibly concentrated … bold yet bright with a pronounced licorice finish,” while Wine Spectator credited it with “a burst of raspberry and blackberry puree flavours … anise-framed finish with herb details.”

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Deep garnet rim reveals a perfume of violet and dark currant, layered with graphite, sage and thyme, crushed rock minerality and hints of licorice and cigar box.

  • Palate: Full-bodied and sumptuous: rich black currant, pomegranate, blueberry and bramble fruit are tightly woven with cedar spice, dark chocolate and subtle asphalt-mineral undertones. The texture is plush, yet the structure remains clear and defined.

  • Finish: Long and cool, with lingering anise and licorice, a subtle thread of dried herbs and forest-floor complexity, and firm but ripe tannins that promise further evolution over years in bottle.
