A Friction of Leather Enhanced with Amber and Woody Nuances - Introduced in 1892
Some fragrances seem destined, carrying within them the memory of great epics. Cuir de Russie belongs to this noble lineage. Inspired by a legendary leather salvaged from the depths of the ocean in the year 1786 during the shipwreck of the Metta Catharina, it evokes a material crafted with precision—soaked in bark baths, then infused with smoked birch according to Russian customs of centuries past.
Long ago, the Tsar’s soldiers treated their leather with birch tar to protect it from harsh
weather, giving it such a distinctive scent that it crossed steppes and seas to become part of Europe’s refined olfactory memory. This practice gave birth to the leather note in perfumery, characterized by smoky, woody, and leathery aromas.
In this composition, one perceives the full artistry of perfumery under the guidance of Jacques Rouché, the House’s director, passionate about history and noble materials. The elegance of French perfumery blends with the strength of Russian leather, in a delicate balance between mastered ruggedness and refinement. From the first notes, the senses are captivated by a burst of bright citrus: lively, tangy bergamot combines with sweet mandarin, elevated by cardamom’s spicy breath. Then comes the heart—a meeting of spices from East and West: coriander, lavender, clove, nutmeg, cumin, and thyme engage in a subtle, expertly orchestrated dialogue. Finally, the base reveals the true soul of the fragrance: a deep, noble, and enveloping leather, accompanied by damp patchouli and dry cedar, like a scent gracefully aged over time.
Cuir de Russie tells its story like an ancient tale whispered softly, still vibrant with the breath of those who lived it.
