Farmer: Benjamin Caliendo
Location: Duxbury, MA
Size: 3"
How they're grown: Howland's Honeydrops are grown in the waters of Kingston Bay in a protected area known as "The Nook'. It's the only farm in Duxbury on the western side of Standish Shore, giving the oysters a distinctive flavor unlike any other oysters grown in Duxbury Bay. After the hatchery and nursery process as seedlings, they mature in raised trays (similar to how Row 34's and Aunt Dotty's grow just a short boat ride away). They will be harvested at 18-24 months.
How they taste: You'll find these are similar to Island Creeks but sweeter due to the farm site's proximity to fresh water sources. Delightfully earthy, mineral, and savory. The shells are strong and resilient.
Why they're unique: The farm sits in the shadow of the Myles Standish Monument. Just beyond the historic Howland's Landing shipyard, you will find the farm in the spot where many famous pilgrims and settlers once foraged for shellfish.
Story: Ben grew up in Duxbury in the historic 'Cable House l on the marshy banks of the Bluefish River. His childhood was spent fishing at high tide and exploring the mudflats at low tide, collecting various shellfish and treasures. In the summers in between his Fisheries Management and Ecology studies, Ben spent his time working at Island Creek Oysters, which eventually led to a full time job on the farm post graduation. Howland's Honeydrops are the manifestation of his education, experiences, and dreams of one day owning his own oyster farm!
