Description
Spice Up the Garden with a Ginger Plant! You’ve always loved the taste of ginger. But how easy is it to grow? Ginger is actually quite simple for any gardening skillset, and it will quickly become one of your favorite plants at harvest time. Here are some of the advantages of growing fresh ginger: Easy to grow in containers Simple harvesting Numerous health benefits Incredible taste when picked Years of ginger from one plant Your kitchen will never be the same once you get your ginger plant up and growing. Fresh ginger root (aka rhizome) can be added to soups, salsas, salad dressings, and teas. It can even be pickled for a unique twist. Plus, ginger’s health benefits are legendary. Ginger is a strong antioxidant that helps everything from digestion to alleviating headaches. You can plant your Ginger in the spring when temps reach above 50 degrees. If you live further north, you can plant the ginger in a container. Ginger is even wonderful to grow inside year-round, as long as you have a lot of humidity and well-drained soil. Give your indoor ginger a simple spritz of water each day to mimic its natural habitat. If you can plant in the ground (typically Zones 9-11), make sure to put your ginger plant in a partial shaded area. Keep the soil moist, although the plant can handle small periods of drought. Ginger is virtually maintenance free, although you should be on the lookout for snails and slugs. You can easily get rid of these pests by picking them off or adding a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth around the plant. Hearty Harvest Inside or Out Your ginger plant is ready for picking when the foliage dies back (typically in the fall if grown outside). Lift the ginger gently from the soil and harvest the roots. Break off part of the ginger root that still has foliage and replant back in the ground. That’s it. Fresh ginger for your kitchen, and new growth for your future harvests! Grab your ginger plant for the spring season. Before you know it, your culinary dreams will come true!
