In this course we look at the official and unofficial Irish ale styles, starting with style guidelines, key ingredients, and a bit of history. To demonstrate how it all comes together in the pint glass, this includes a walkthrough of the brewing process for the all-grain and extract versions of Northern Brewer’s Irish Blonde Ale, Irish Red Ale, and Dry Irish Stout recipe kits.

Then, we talk one-on-one with brewers to get technical advice, brewing tips, and recipes. Mark Hunger, brewmaster at Great Lakes Brewing Company, talks us through the brewery’s award-winning Conway’s Irish Ale and pub-exclusive Wolfhound Stout. Homebrewer Brooks Edman and pro brewer Ryan Foltz of Pour Man’s Brewing Company talk about their pro-am beer release Lucy’s Irish Extra Stout, born from a homebrew recipe which you’ll have access to as a downloadable bonus to the course.

The Brewing to Style series looks at different beer styles – everything from classic and historical styles, to the most popular new styles – what makes them unique, how they are brewed, and what variations you might find. We approach styles from a homebrewer’s perspective, but also present conversations with professional brewers to more fully understand style guidelines and brewing techniques.
