Product Description

Auchentoshan Three Wood is a bold, richly flavoured Lowland single malt, standing out in the Auchentoshan range thanks to its sherry-wood finishes. It brings pronounced sweet fruit and dessert-like tones, yet retains enough balance and freshness not to feel cloying. Great for those who appreciate lush sherry influence, toasted oak, and a whisky with depth rather than minimalism.

Origins & Craftsmanship

  • Distillery: Auchentoshan, located in the Lowlands near Glasgow, Scotland — known for their triple distillation process which typically produces lighter, smoother spirits.

  • Maturation / Cask Profile: First matured in ex-bourbon casks, then finished in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, and finally in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. The “three wood” refers to those three cask types.

  • Strength / ABV: 43% ABV.

Tasting Profile

Element Notes
Colour / Appearance Rich golden brown, with deeper tones from the sherry casks.
Nose / Aroma Blackcurrant, brown sugar, orange peel, plum and raisin undertones. Also fruit jam and a mellow sherry sweetness from the oloroso & PX influence.
Palate / Taste Fruit syrup, prunes, raisins, plus roasted hazelnut, butterscotch, with hints of spice such as cinnamon; some oak bitterness balanced by sweetness.
Finish Fresh and fruity, with a long-lasting oaky sweetness; lingering dried fruit, mild spice, and a toffee or chocolate undertone.

Food & Cocktail Pairings

  • Cocktails:

    • Sherry-rich Old Fashioned style (use this instead of plain bourbon/rye for depth)

    • Whisky toddy or warm whisky & spiced cider — the sherry and fruit notes complement warm spices.

    • Dessert-style whisky cocktails where PX/herbal bitters can bring out the sweetness and fruit.

  • Food Pairings:

    • Desserts: Fruit-based desserts like plum pudding, sticky toffee pudding, spiced fruitcake, or any dessert with dried fruit and sugar & syrup.

    • Chocolate & Sweets: Dark chocolate with orange, chocolate & hazelnut treats, toffee or caramel desserts.

    • Cheese: Nutty cheeses (like aged gouda, walnut cheese), or creamy blue cheeses, where the richness matches the whisky.

    • Nuts & Dried Fruit: Toasted nuts: hazelnuts and walnuts; dried figs, raisins, raisins or plums.

    • Savory: Roast pork or duck with fruit glaze; pork belly with date or plum sauce; charcuterie with dried fruits; perhaps even sticky ribs.
