The Queen of House Plants

Are you looking for an exotic house plant to add to your collection? Black Velvet’s botanical name, Alocasia Reginula, means little queen, and there’s no doubt this plant is meant for royalty!

With heart-shaped leaves that are so green they almost look black and prominent white veins and purple undersides, its foliage offers a striking contrast. Big and soft, the leaves have tiny hairs that give them the look and feel of velvet.

Originally from the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeastern Asia and India, Alocasia brings the tropics to your house. Fantastic as a container plant, Black Velvet works well on patios, as a house plant, and can even grow in-ground in zones 9-10.

Alocasia plants don’t get too large, but they'll make a big statement to enhance your homescape. They're also known to be fast growers, and for lush foliage you can quickly enjoy!

While easy to grow, Alocasia Black Velvet is toxic to pets and people and should be kept away from animals and children.

Add this tropical queen to your collection today and watch it quickly flourish!

Planting & Care

1. Planting: As a tropical, Alocasia likes bright light, but its leaves will burn in direct sun. Place the plant in a spot with bright, indirect light near (but not directly in front of) a sunny window.

You won't need to repot your Alocasia right away. Only repot the plant when it outgrows its shipped container. Select a pot that's twice the width of the original container. When repotting, make sure your pot has drainage holes and use an organic soil mix.

2. Watering: Alocasia likes moist, well-draining soil. Water well when the soil is dry. Use your finger to check the soil's moisture level, pushing about 2 or 3 inches down. Water your plant when the top 2 inches of the soil are dry. You can also mist your Alocasia with a spray bottle 2 to 3 times weekly to mimic a humid, tropical environment.

3. Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged foliage to encourage healthy growth.
