Dramatic Color and Velvet-Soft Texture

Why Alocasia Black Velvet?

If you’re looking for a wholly unique house plant, the Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ fits the bill. With leaves that look like crushed black velvet, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything else like it!

The Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ earns its name from its deep, dramatic color and the tiny hairs that grow on its leaves, giving it the soft look of velvet. The foliage is a deep green-black hue with purple undersides, and each leaf is streaked with prominent white veins.

With a petite size and a big impact, the Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is an ideal container plant, perfect for adding interest and tropical vibes to countertops, sunny window ledges and more. And while it can be planted outdoors in warmer climates, this native of Southeastern Asia and India typically performs best inside.

Wherever you keep it, your Alocasia will prefer indirect, bright sunlight. It also likes moist, well-draining soil and humid conditions - you can mist it several times a week to mimic its native climate. The Alocasia can be toxic, so proceed with caution around pets and children.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: The Alocasia likes bright light, but its leaves will burn in direct sun, so place it in a spot with bright, indirect light. Its ideal spot is near, but not directly in front of, a sunny window.

You won’t need to re-pot your Alocasia right away; only re-pot when it outgrows its shipped container. Then, select a pot that’s about twice the width of the original container. When repotting, make sure your pot has good drainage holes, and use organic soil mix.

2. Watering: Your Alocasia likes moist, well-draining soil. Use your finger to check the soil’s moisture level, about two or three inches down. So, water well when the soil is dry. Water your plant when there is a full two inches of dryness from the top of the soil.

You can also mist your Alocasia with a spray bottle twice or three times weekly, to mimic a humid, tropical environment.

3. Pruning: Remove dead or damaged foliage to encourage healthy growth.
