Agave americana 'Variegata': An more colorful take on the classic Century Plant
If Agave americana is the reigning Queen of the Desert, then ‘Variegata’ is her gilded, show-stopping sister. (For those unfamiliar, variegated simply means the leaves have more than one color.)
This variation, Agave americana ‘Variegata’, features creamy, yellow edges along its signature massive blue-green leaves. 'Variegata' is just as striking and sculptural as her classic counterpart — it can also reach 6 to 10 feet wide and often grows just as tall — and features the same growing habits and lifecycle.
That's right. Once ‘Variegata’ is fully mature (anywhere from 10 to 20 years), she puts on a heck of a finale: First, the plant puts out a giant flowering stalk up up to 30 feet tall which is then filled with clusters of creamy yellow-green flowers over the next couple months. Once the blooms are spent, the mother plant gradually declines and dies, but not before producing plenty of pups (baby agaves) at its base to continue the legacy.
Whether you’re curating a desert-chic oasis, designing a modern sculptural garden, or placing it as a statement piece in a container, this plant brings big, bold energy with effortless elegance.
Why 'Variegata'?
- Eye-Catching Design: The variegated leaves create a vibrant contrast that pops in any setting.
- Resilient Beauty: The Agave americana is the queen of the desert. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and easy to care for; thrives with minimal attention and water.
- Multi-Purpose: Ideal for xeriscaping, borders, or as a striking container plant for patios and indoor spaces. (Just know that growing in a container may affect size and bloom time)
- Longevity: A slow grower that provides years of dramatic beauty.
Planting & Care Tips:
Plant in a sunny location with well-drained soil. When grown in containers, use a gritty soil mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. For indoor growth, place in a bright spot with plenty of indirect light.
