Product Description
This Monongahela-mash version of A. Overholt brings a bold, heritage-driven rye-whiskey character to the modern shelf. With robust spice, deep grain richness and intriguing historic roots, it’s a serious rye for drinking neat or elevating classic cocktails.
Origins & Craftsmanship
A. Overholt is rooted in the original Pennsylvania rye tradition (the Monongahela region), with the brand tracing back to 1810. The current Monongahela Mash version uses a mash bill of 80% rye and 20% malted barley, intentionally excluding corn to reflect the historic formula. The whiskey is distilled, aged and bottled under the Overholt banner by Beam Suntory in Kentucky. It is labelled “Monongahela Mash” to reference its rye-heavy heritage.
Critics Reviews
-
Whiskey reviewer Eric Hasman described this release as “rich and bold! The aromas jump out of the glass – rye bread, raisins, cinnamon; on the palate you find molasses, baking spices and woody quality despite its youth.”
-
Tasting writer Steve Coomes called it “a rye whiskey with a ton of herbal character—not masked by sweet Kentucky-style corn—bread-rye, saddle leather and caraway seed stand out; it’s intriguing, rough-hewn and satisfying.”
-
Industry commentary highlights that the brand’s return to a true monongahela-style mash bill “makes this release both a drinkable whiskey and a revival of rye history.”
Tasting Profile
-
Nose: Sweet rye bread and molasses open the aroma, with baking spice (cinnamon, nutmeg), raisins, fresh-cut leather and a hint of citrus peel.
-
Palate: Medium-to-full body; strong rye-grain presence gives spicy, earthy character—caraway seed, rye bread crust and mulch-like woodiness—balanced with raisin sweetness and gentle vanilla.
-
Finish: Long, warm and pepper-spiced; cinnamon and nutmeg linger, wood tannin draws it out and a soft citrus zest note surfaces at the tail.
