After bringing slaves from Africa to England multiple times and after becoming violently ill during one of his voyages, he wholeheartedly gave up his life as a slave trader and devoted his life to spirituality. After actively advocating for the slave trade, he actively worked towards abolishing it! He was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1764 and penned 280 hymns - one of which was Amazing Grace!
